Cool roof shingles are asphalt shingles made with reflective granules so they soak up less of the sun than a standard shingle in the same color. GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed all sell them. But after years of roofing in Katy, the honest answer to “which shingle is best for Texas heat” is that color and attic ventilation usually matter more than the brand name on the bundle.
I am a roofer in Katy. Here is what cool roof shingles actually do, how to check a specific color instead of trusting a brochure, where they help, where they do not, and how heat fits with the hail decision every Katy homeowner faces.

What cool roof shingles actually do
A regular asphalt shingle absorbs most of the sunlight that hits it and turns it into heat. Some of that heat moves through the decking into the attic. Cool roof shingles use granules that reflect more of the sun’s energy, so the shingle surface runs cooler and less heat reaches the attic.
The U.S. Department of Energy puts the difference in plain numbers on its Energy Saver page on cool roofs: a conventional roof can reach 150°F or more on a sunny summer afternoon, and a reflective roof under the same sun could stay more than 50°F cooler. That is the surface of the roof, not your living room. How much of it you feel inside depends on your attic.
Two numbers describe a cool roof product. Solar reflectance is how much sunlight it bounces back. Thermal emittance is how well it sheds the heat it does absorb. There is no single cutoff that makes a shingle “cool.” DOE notes that the minimums vary by program, location and roof slope.
How to check a cool roof shingle color
Reflectance changes from color to color inside the same product line, so “this line is a cool roof shingle” is only half an answer. The independent source is the Cool Roof Rating Council. Its rated products directory, which the DOE’s Building America Solution Center describes as a searchable database of over 3,000 roofing products tested for solar reflectance and thermal emittance, lets you look up the exact color you are considering.
Here is how I would use it:
- Pick the brand, product line and color you actually like.
- Look that color up in the CRRC directory, or ask your roofer to pull the listing.
- Compare it with the standard version of the same color, if one exists.
- Decide whether the difference is worth the price gap on your quote.
How the major brands handle it
CertainTeed. CertainTeed’s reflective line is Landmark Solaris. Its Landmark TL Solaris product page says all colors are rated by the CRRC and that the colors can be used to meet California’s 2022 Title 24 cool roof requirements. CertainTeed does not publish one reflectance number for the whole line on that page, because it varies by color. As a CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, this is the line we know best.
GAF and Owens Corning. Both sell reflective versions of their architectural shingles, built on the same idea: granules that reflect more sunlight while keeping darker colors on the menu. Treat their marketing the same way as anyone else’s. Get the exact color, then check the rating.
For the brand-versus-brand question on wind, algae and warranty rather than heat, see our GAF vs Owens Corning comparison for Katy.
Cool roof shingles alone will not fix a hot attic
Every cool roof shingle helps at the surface. None of them replace ventilation. Heat and moisture trapped in an attic do most of the long-term damage to a roofing system, and a cooler shingle over a badly vented attic still leaves you with a hot, damp attic.
If you only have budget for one thing, look at ventilation first. Our breakdown of attic ventilation requirements in Harris and Fort Bend County covers what code asks for, and our guide to attic ventilation methods covers how to get there. If you are weighing a radiant barrier too, read our take on whether an attic radiant barrier works in Katy before you spend on both.
Where cool roof shingles make sense in Katy
They earn their place in a few specific situations:
- You want a dark color for curb appeal or your HOA, and you do not want to give up as much reflectance. Reflective granules narrow that gap.
- You have rooms under the roof, like a game room or bonus room over the garage, that stay hot no matter what the thermostat says.
- Your ventilation is already right, and you want the next step.
- You are replacing the roof anyway, so the upgrade is a price difference, not a whole project.
When they are not worth the extra money
Skip them, or at least do not lead with them, if your attic ventilation is weak. Fix that first. They are also a weak buy if you already plan to choose a light color, since a light standard shingle may get you most of the way there.
DOE also points out two tradeoffs. Less absorbed sun means a little less free heat in winter, which matters less here than up north. And in warm, humid places, algae and mold stains show more clearly on light roofs. In Katy humidity, that makes an algae-resistant granule worth checking for on any light-colored shingle.
Heat is half the decision: hail comes next
Katy roofs deal with heat, hail, wind and humidity at the same time. For most homes here, the bigger money decision is impact rating, not reflectance. When we help someone pick a shingle, we look at four things:
- Polymer-modified asphalt. It stays flexible longer in heat and handles impact better than standard asphalt.
- Algae resistance. Our humidity feeds black streaks. Look at the algae warranty length.
- A forgiving nail zone. Wider or reinforced nailing areas hold better in wind.
- Matched system parts. Use the maker’s starter, underlayment and ridge cap so the system warranty applies.
Some cool roof shingles also come in impact-rated versions, but not every color exists in every combination. Our posts on Class 3 vs Class 4 shingles and the best Class 4 shingles for Katy cover that side. For pricing, our Texas roof replacement cost guide shows what moves the number.
Cool roof shingle questions we hear
Do cool roof shingles lower my electric bill?
They can reduce cooling demand, but savings depend on your ventilation, insulation, ductwork in the attic and the color you choose. Nobody can promise you a number without knowing your house.
Are cool roof shingles required in Katy or Houston?
No. The cool roof codes you read about are in places like California. Here they are an optional upgrade chosen for comfort.
Do they cost more?
Usually, yes, compared with the same maker’s standard architectural shingle. Ask for the price difference on your specific line and color.
Can I coat my existing shingles instead?
DOE advises against field-coating asphalt shingles because of moisture problems and the risk of voiding the shingle warranty. If you want a cooler roof, it is a replacement decision.
