This is the honest breakdown: what goes into the price, how to check a quote line by line, and when new gutters are not the thing you should be spending money on.

Aluminum goes on the large majority of homes we work on in Katy, Cypress and Fulshear, and for good reason. It does not rust, it comes in dozens of factory colors, and it is light enough to hang on a fascia board without extra blocking. Ask what thickness you are getting. Residential aluminum is commonly sold in a thinner and a heavier gauge, and the heavier one dents less when a ladder leans on it or hail comes through.
Steel is stronger, but it rusts where it is cut or scratched, and it is heavy. Copper is beautiful and lasts a very long time, but at two to three times the price of aluminum it only makes sense on a house where the gutters are part of the design.
How to Estimate Seamless Gutter Cost for Your House
Gutters are priced by the linear foot of eave, not by the square footage of the house. So the fastest way to ballpark your seamless gutter cost is to walk the house and add up every edge where water runs off the roof.
Here is a round-number illustration, not a quote. Say a single-story home has 180 linear feet of eave. At the aluminum range of $9 to $13 per foot, that is $1,620 to $2,340 before any fascia repair. A two-story house with the same footprint usually lands higher per foot, because the crew is working off taller ladders and the upper runs take longer to hang safely.
Downspouts are the line item that moves your seamless gutter cost most after footage. Some contractors fold them into the per-foot price, and some charge per downspout. Neither is wrong. What matters is that you can see how many you are getting and where each one drains.
5-Inch or 6-Inch Gutters for Houston Rain
Most builder homes in our area came with 5-inch K-style gutters and 2×3 downspouts. On a simple roof, that is usually fine if there are enough downspouts. The trouble shows up where a large roof plane or a valley dumps a lot of water into a short run of gutter. In a hard Gulf Coast downpour, that water jumps right over the front lip.
A 6-inch gutter holds more and pairs with a larger 3×4 downspout, which moves water off the roof faster and clogs less. It adds a little to the seamless gutter cost per foot. My honest take: a single-story ranch with a simple hip roof rarely needs it. A two-story with big valleys over the back patio often does. If you are replacing gutters anyway, that is the cheapest time to size up.
What Drives the Price Beyond Material
- Linear footage and corners: more roofline and more miters mean more fabrication and hanging time
- Roof height and pitch: steep or two-story homes need more setup and take longer
- Downspout count and size: Texas storms often need more downspouts than the builder minimum
- Fascia condition: soft or rotted fascia has to be replaced before new gutters go up
- Removal and haul-off of the old system
- Gutter guards: an added $7 to $15 per linear foot when installed with new gutters
Where the Water Goes After the Downspout
A gutter that catches water and drops it at the corner of the slab has only done half its job. Much of Katy and west Houston sits on clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and a downspout soaking one corner of the foundation is exactly the kind of uneven moisture that clay reacts to.
The residential building code speaks to this directly. InterNACHI’s inspection guidance notes that where expansive or collapsible soils are present, roof drainage should discharge at least 5 feet from the foundation under IRC section R801.3. In practice that means extensions, splash blocks pointed the right way, or underground drains that exit to a pop-up emitter well away from the house. Underground drains are only as good as their slope, so ask how they will be pitched and where they come out. A buried drain that holds water is worse than a simple extension you can see.
Is Seamless Gutter Cost Worth It Over Sectional?
Sectional gutters come in fixed lengths joined with connectors and sealant. They cost less upfront, and they leak at those joints as the sealant ages in Texas heat. Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil into one continuous piece per run, so the only joints are at the corners and the end caps.
For a whole house, the higher seamless gutter cost usually pays for itself in fewer leaks and less fascia rot. Sectional still has a place. A short run on a detached shed or a small porch is a reasonable DIY job with box-store sections, and I would not tell you to pay a crew for that.
When New Gutters Are Not the Answer
Plenty of gutter calls end with me telling someone they do not need new gutters. If the gutters are straight and holding, and the problem is a leaking end cap, a loose outlet or a sag where hangers pulled out, that is a repair. Our gutter installation and repair team handles those every week.
A few other situations call for patience:

When the roof is near the end. If your roof is within a few years of replacement, time the gutters with it. The drip edge and gutter have to work together at the eave, and doing both at once avoids paying to remove and rehang new gutters. When the fascia is the real problem. Gutters pulling away from the house are often a symptom of rotted wood behind them. New gutters screwed into soft fascia will pull loose again.
How to Read a Gutter Quote
- Linear footage, measured per side of the house
- Material and thickness (gauge) of the aluminum or steel
- Gutter size (5-inch or 6-inch) and downspout size
- Number of downspouts and where each one discharges
- Hanger type and spacing, fastened with screws rather than old spike-and-ferrule
- Fascia repair, priced per board or per foot, and whether any is included
- Removal and haul-off of the old gutters
- Color, and whether it meets your HOA's approved list
- Workmanship warranty, in writing
If two quotes for the same house show a very different seamless gutter cost, it is almost always one of these lines. One bid includes fascia and six downspouts, and the other assumes four downspouts and no wood. Line them up side by side before you decide which one is cheaper.
