Like Noble Oklahoma, the city of Tecumseh is also in Pottawatomie County Oklahoma. Tecumseh is about the same size as Noble with around 6,500 population as of the 2010 US census. The city of Tecumseh was named for the noted Shawnee Indian chief, Tecumseh. Tecumseh was designated as the county seat at Oklahoma’s statehood but a later county-wide election moved the county seat to Shawnee in 1930.
On September 23rd, 1891 a 320-acre site was opened for settlement. An Army Major named the townsite Tecumseh which had been designated as the seat of County B in at that time the newly formed Oklahoma Territory by the Department of the Interior on July 17th, 1891. On September 18, 1891, a post office was established in the town.
The city of Tecumseh was hit by a powerful EF3 tornado on May 10, 2010. This was the first tornado to hit the city since May 17, 1981. The 1981 tornado hit the rural southern part of town and was the first tornado to go through the city proper since records have been kept since 1950.
