The Beginning of Moore
The history of Moore Oklahoma dates back into the 1800s with the Moore post office being established on May 27, 1889. The city of Moore was named for a Topeka and Santa Fe Railway employee named Al Moore. According to Moore town history, Al Moore was a conductor or a brakeman and lived in a boxcar at the camp. Al Moore apparently had trouble receiving his mail, so he painted his name Moore on a board and nailed it to his boxcar. After a postmaster was named he continued to call the settlement Moore and when the town was incorporated in 1893, the name was legalized.
Moore stayed relatively small for decades and in 1961 Moore annexed 21.6 square miles and became a full-fledged city in 1962. The increase in size had a drastic effect on the population. The city of Moore’s population grew from 1,221 in 1960 to just under 19,000 in 1970.
